Tesserae
Smalti
Tesserae
Smalti, opaque glass hand poured and cut in small batches, was developed
over 2,000 years ago during the Byzantine era. The hand cutting
creates the desirable irregular surface that is prized for its ability
to reflect light, giving the mosaic a jewel-like appearance. Intertexture's
smalti is still produced in this traditional method in Italy.
Porcelain
Tesserae
Pigment is mixed directly into the clay of the unglazed tile
giving it a stone-like appearance. Glazed tile are coated with
a high-fire surface color resulting in a glossy appearance.
Cast
Glass Tesserae
These translucent tiles create a brilliant statement of color and
form. Cast glass tiles are offered in many vibrant colors.
